Regrets – A Poem About Grandma
What’s wrong, Doctor?
4 year old me mumbles,
Not understanding why,
You lay on an uncomfortable blue “bed.”
Your once peach pink lips,
Now a dull grey.
It’s cancer hon,
He replies, mustering a wonky smile.
If only I knew,
I would no longer see your eyes,
Like hot chocolate,
On a cold winter day,
Sending tingles,
Through my frigid body.
If only I knew,
I would no longer get your hugs,
Like a tight warm blanket,
Wrapped around my shaking body,
Soaking up my salty tears.
If only I knew,
Before your heart monitor screamed,
A high pitched beep.
I watched as they rushed me out,
That grey hospital door.
I didn’t scream,
Didn’t argue,
Nor did I cry.
Didn’t hold your hand,
As you faded away.
Didn’t scream,
Let me stay!
When they pushed me out.
Didn’t whisper,
I love you,
When you took your last breath.
I never saw you again.
I’m sorry Grandma.
